The VIPER board offers a long list of features making it ideal for power sensitive embedded communications and multimedia applications. The board has been designed to take advantage of the power saving modes of the PXA255 processor and other onboard peripherals to achieve an incredible 1.9W
maximum power consumption. The VIPER also supports a very low power standby mode of just 250mW.
The
VIPER board includes a TFT/STN flat panel graphics controller, onboard
soldered SDRAM and resident Flash, 10/100baseTx Ethernet, 5 serial
ports, I²C controller, dual USB host controller, USB client, AC97
audio/codec,
CompactFlash interface (CF+), and a standard PC104 bus expansion
connector. The PC104 format is an industrial form factor measuring
3.8” x 3.6” (96mm x 91mm).
The VIPER is supported with low cost Entry Level Development Kit for
embedded Linux and also system level Development Kits for
Windows CE
5.0, embedded
Linux, VxWorks
5.5 and QNX
Neutrino. The system level Kits include a full metal
enclosure (VIPER
ICE) fitted with the
VIPER-UPS and an optional quarter VGA color touch-screen display. To
speed up the process of system integration, you can purchase
individual cables and the Ethernet adapter module
used within the VIPER ICE enclosure and the associated Development Kits.
The VIPER board can be connected directly to the
VIPER-I/O module
to provide opto-isolated inputs, outputs, relay control, push switches
and status LEDs. For cost
sensitive high volume applications Arcom offers the VIPER-Lite - an
alternative configuration based on the 200MHz PXA255 fitted with
64Mbytes DRAM and 16Mbytes Flash. Check out the VIPER-Lite
web page for more details. One of the practical issues to be resolved by OEM users is the connection
of displays from different manufacturers. Arcom has made this easy by offering a number of display interface adapters to create direct
connection to a wide range of displays from companies such as NEC, Sharp,
Optrex, Hitachi and Kyocera. Arcom also provides a low cost module for converting the output signalling to
LVDS
- a
system for driving displays located up to 5m from the video source. A complementary adapter
is also available to convert from LVDS back to parallel digital. This
adapter is particularly useful for small form factor displays which do not support LVDS input.
