Development Kit for embedded Linux for PXA255 XScale application development

on Arcom hardware platforms and is pre-loaded and configured into the embedded Flash. This offers an embedded version of Linux with a proven background, combined with a high reliability journaling Flash File system.

The Development Kit gives you an incredible range of functions to enable you to create low power solutions for wired/wireless information terminals, instrumentation controllers, data acquisition systems and communication products. The Development Kit includes the low power 400MHz VIPER PC/104 single board computer fitted with 64Mbytes of DRAM, 32Mbytes of Intel StrataFlash and 256Kbytes of SRAM. The board is fitted inside a rugged industrial compact enclosure (VIPER-ICE) and includes a battery backed uninterruptible power supply (VIPER-UPS), an external AC PSU, optional Q-VGA flat panel TFT screen and analog touchscreen, cables to connect to your host system, and a comprehensive information/software CD.

The demand for high speed wireless connectivity within embedded OEM applications continues to grow at an impressive rate. To meet this demand, the embedded Linux image used on the VIPER now includes support for IEEE 802.11b CompactFlash cards based on the PRISM chipset (with the ability to define the 128-bit WEP keys using a configuration file).

Arcom uses RedBoot as a simple, fast, reliable mechanism for initializing the VIPER and loading the embedded Linux image from the onboard Flash. RedBoot also allows you to download and re-program the VIPER with a recompiled Linux operating system image. Arcom creates and supports the embedded Linux distribution using an experienced in-house development team – that means you get total product support directly from Arcom.

Arcom recognizes that Linux is used extensively in deeply embedded solutions and that secure communications is an important part of any application involved in control and monitoring functions. Many users of telnet, rlogin and ftp may not realize that password information is transmitted across the Internet unencrypted. Arcom uses OpenSSH to encrypt all traffic (including passwords) to effectively eliminate eavesdropping, connection hijacking, and other network-level attacks. OpenSSH can also provide a variety of secure tunneling capabilities and authentication methods.

The Development Kit also includes the option of using Java technology (J2ME) implemented with the IBM J9™ VM and includes the WebSphere Studio Device Developer (WSDD) IDE tools for embedded Java development. These optional technologies have been optimized for use on the VIPER hardware platform and can be quickly installed into the embedded Flash.

Technical Documentation: Arcom provides on-line access to detailed technical documentation to help you select the best product for your application. You can download the manual for the VIPER board Development Kit for Embedded Linux/Java and related products by clicking here.
